Which recessed spotlights are suitable for the bathroom?

In the bathroom, the placement of the spot is particularly important. The closer the spot is to the shower, bath, or sink, the better the protection against moisture must be. Therefore, when choosing bathroom recessed spotlights, always look at the IP rating.

For dry areas of the bathroom, a lower IP rating is often sufficient. Above or close to the shower, however, a better protected spot is needed. If you are unsure about the correct zone, it is better to choose a safer, higher IP rating or have the situation assessed by an installer.

Guideline per bathroom zone

  • Zone 0: in the bath or shower tray, usually at least IP67.
  • Zone 1: above the bath or shower up to 2.25 meters, usually at least IP65.
  • Zone 2: around the bath, shower and sink, often at least IP44.
  • Outside the wet zones: IP20 or IP21 can sometimes be sufficient, provided the spot does not come into direct contact with moisture.
